Company

History

It all started with a question.

On a family trip to the Bolivian Amazon, Miriam Ibáñez visited the sawmill where her father, a forestry engineer, worked. She saw the offcuts set aside and asked what was done with them.

‘They get burned, because they're no use.’

That answer is where Mibawood comes from. For years, a good part of the tropical hardwood was thrown away out of habit or a demand for uniformity: species with excellent technical properties stayed off the market simply because they weren't the usual ones.

The turning point

60,000 m² of ipé, and a mountain of waste.

The National Library of France, by Dominique Perrault, was decked with 60,000 m² of ipé. The demand for perfectly uniform sizes created extraordinary waste at source.

That is where the idea behind the company comes from: sustainable forest management isn't about counting trees, it is about getting more out of each trunk. We cannot go back to the forest of three hundred years ago, but we can manage today's with more precision.

Optimising is not an option, it is a responsibility.

Timeline

Twenty years, five decisions.

2005

Paris · François Mitterrand National Library. 60,000 m² of ipé in Dominique Perrault's building. The question it leaves behind: can you build with tropical timber without wasting forest?

2010

Bolivia · the first exercise in adding value. Recovering timber with leading architecture practices and non-standard formats: ipé, cuchi, almendrillo. The first time a price was put on what the industry was throwing away.

2022

Europe · distribution network. Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany and Greece. Representing Décor et Jardin, Gardenode and Jouplast for outdoor use.

2022

Guatemala · the forest-centric model. A trip with a tropical forest conservation NGO changes the thinking: instead of fighting over the ‘commercial’ species, diversify demand by grouping by colour and by character. It is the reason this catalogue is ordered by colour and not by species.

2024

A Europe-wide alliance. Signed as a strategic supplier to one of the largest European distribution groups, with a 2026–2030 horizon.

R&D

Two products that came out of a surplus. With ToneWood, in Valencia, the offcuts from acoustic guitars became mahogany cladding. And the tropical hardwood batten was born to complete the technical solution without leaving the same forest.

Company

Mission and vision

What underpins the company's decisions, in six ideas.

Strength, elegance and sustainability in every surface.

Built to stand up to the harshest weather, our products offer durability, stability and strength.

Mission

To bring nature into every space with traceable, long-lasting and responsible solutions.

Vision

To be a benchmark in sustainable solutions for living spaces.

Transparency

FSC® chain of custody, EUDR due diligence and geolocation of the forest of origin. Full traceability, from the tree to the board.

Responsibility

Time, habitat and people. Looking after the resource also means looking after those who live from it.

Productivity

Processes that get ahead of the problem and cut out cost that adds nothing. Optimising the trunk means optimising the price.

Design and R&D

We design from respect for the forest, the durability of the product and what the person fitting it needs.

Forest-centric

Every origin matters. Instead of forcing the forest to yield a single species, we group by colour and by character and use what the forest gives.

Not follow, but drive

Preserving also means improving: we exist to manage the resource better, not to repeat the same old standard.
