Maintenance

Not much, but the right thing.

What decking and exterior cladding really need: water, neutral soap and letting the air run underneath. The rest depends on the material, and it is less than it sounds.

True for all three

Four things, and all three surfaces.

Tropical hardwood, composite and bamboo ask for the same basics. What changes is what comes after.

Water and pH-neutral soap

The usual clean, and the same for all three materials: a soft-bristled brush and water with neutral soap.

Never at pressure

Pressure washing splinters the wood and raises the grain. Low pressure, and never aimed straight at the surface.

Keep the cavity clear

Leaves and debris out. The water has to drain and the air has to move underneath: that is what decides how long the installation lasts.

One board, not the floor

Localised damage is fixed by replacing that piece, without taking up the whole surface.

The two products

One takes the grey off. The other gives the colour back.

They do not do the same thing and they are not used at the same time. MibaRenew cleans and leaves the wood pale; MibaProtect rehydrates it and brings the tone back. In that order.

MibaRenew

Reviver

Water-based cleaning gel for tropical hardwood out in the weather. It removes ingrained dirt and surface greying.

It goes on the wood and rinses off with water. Available to order.

Tin of MibaProtect, protector for tropical hardwood

MibaProtect

Neutral and walnut

Protects against sun and weather, and brings back the wood's original colour.

One application a year, depending on the climate and how exposed the surface is.

Tropical hardwood

A 100 % natural material. Every board has its own grain and variations: those are not defects, they are what makes it genuine. In the sun the surface turns silver-grey, and that is cosmetic: it does not affect its strength.

How often

  • Regular cleaning with water and neutral soap, to take off dust, leaves and built-up dirt.
  • Never pressure washing: it splinters the wood.
  • MibaProtect once a year, adjusted to the climate and how exposed it is.

Underneath

  • An access point planned from the start, so it can be inspected without lifting anything.
  • Ventilation and drainage: the water has to get out, not sit there.
  • Clear of leaves and organic debris.

If it has already gone grey

  • First MibaRenew, which takes off the greying and leaves the wood pale, almost whitish.
  • Then MibaProtect, which rehydrates it and brings back its natural or walnut colour.
  • On badly worn surfaces, a light sanding before protecting it again.

WPC composite

A technical material made for outdoors. The colour stays practically unchanged and the surface takes the weather without any work from you: it is the lowest-maintenance of the three.

Exterior wall clad in composite

How often

  • Water and pH-neutral soap or a mild detergent. That is all it takes.
  • Stains, as soon as you can: they come out better fresh.
  • The gaps between boards, clear, so the water drains.

What it does NOT need

  • No sanding, no oiling, no periodic protective treatments.
  • No structural maintenance beyond keeping the air cavity clean.
  • That is what brings the cost down over its working life.

Underneath

  • An access point so it can be inspected.
  • Ventilation and drainage in place.
  • Clear of leaves and organic debris.

Bamboo

Densified bamboo: a natural material with a technical process behind it that gives it high stability and durability. With sun and rain its tone shifts slightly, without that affecting its mechanical properties.

How often

  • Water and pH-neutral soap for dust, leaves and dirt.
  • Avoid a pressure washer directly on the surface.
  • Oil made specifically for outdoor bamboo, once or twice a year in areas with a lot of sun.

If the finish has gone

  • Strip the aged film and clean the surface.
  • Light sanding if it needs evening out.
  • Apply again the protector on a dry, clean surface.

Underneath

  • An access point so it can be inspected.
  • Ventilation and drainage in place.
  • Clear of leaves and organic debris.
